Ros’s first feedback came from Diana on Wednesday morning, when the two of them coincided at drop-off. Once they’d kissed their children and sent them, arms wheeling, across the playground to start their day, they fell into step as they walked away.

‘So,’ Diana said quietly, ‘how’s Lotte doing? What’s the verdict from Adam?’

Ros said miserably: ‘Hasn’t said a word.’

‘Really?’ Diana raised an eyebrow, looking Ros over. ‘Is he still mad at you?’

Ros shrugged. ‘Apparently.’

Diana tutted. ‘Don’t worry. It’ll blow over. Always does.’ She paused and Ros felt her friend searching for the right words. ‘She is good, you know. Maybe he’s right.’

Ros pursed her lips. She didn’t want to know.

Diana went on: ‘I went in to see Adam yesterday afternoon for my shoulder.’ She pulled her arm back as if she were preparing to launch herself into an imaginary tennis serve. ‘Much better, by the way. Anyway, Lotte was there. She’s super-efficient. That last one was always getting her times muddled. Drove me mad.’

They reached the end of the alleyway.

Ros didn’t pause to talk any further, just said abruptly, ‘Gotta dash. Great to see you.’

Diana looked surprised. ‘Sure. You, too.’ She reached out and patted Ros on the arm as she turned to leave. ‘You take care of yourself, alright?’
